Punjab, the land of five rivers has love and romance in its air. Writers, poets and the story tellers, they have episodes of amour which they sing and dance to from generations to generations. The land has seen various sagas of love like Heer ranjha, sohni mahiwal, mirza Sahibaand many more.But out of these Sassi Punnu is the most iconic and celebrated. Sassi Punnu-Punjabi Folk Painting is a beautiful Punjabi folk Painting which portrays it well.
Sassi was a blessing of almighty, as a fisherman found her near the river and adopted her. Raised a daughter of a fisherman, she had a personality of a princess which she actually was. She was abandoned by her Royal Family as astrologers predicted her to be Bane for the Royalness of the family.
Punnu, fell in love with her while looking at her for the first time. Though his family was against this union but they agreed,to which they later tricked and betrayed. His brothers toxicated him one night prior to the marriage and took him back to their kingdom.
Sassi, mistakenly considered as if her lover left her deliberately before marriage, thus ruining her family’s reputation. She ran barefoot towards their kingdom, crossing the desert but didn’t reach. The scorching heat and miles of journey took her life.
